Aluminium Extrusion Challenges

The Global Aluminium extrusion market in 2022 was 92 billion, about 30 million tonnes, which is 28% of the total Aluminium market. The extrusion business is highly fragmented worldwide, and the major five players contribute just 16% of the world's requirements.

Aluminium Extrusion Market

Presently the demand is expected at a CAGR of 7.5%, and extrusion has a huge potential. With increasing pressure on environmental and emission norms, the use of greener, lighter, and environment-friendly metal will continue.

The product segments for Aluminium products can be classified into Building & Construction, Automotive & Transportation, Consumer Durables, electrical energy, and industrial machinery, the highest being in B&C and the next being A&T.

Each product segment has its unique process and quality requirements, which pose a huge challenge in manufacturing, packing, transportation, and storage.

Challenges

Unique challenges for the B&C segment are surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and weight per meter. For A&T, it is strength, dimensional accuracy, and ultrasonically sound product.

High-tech industrial products like aerospace components, auto bumpers, space frames, chassis, panels, transmission housings, and engine blocks for cars, trucks, boats, and railways require huge investments.

Conclusion

In order to meet these challenging needs of each segment, the process needs to be robust and customized, as each customer has unique requirements.

Process controls like closed-loop temperature control, controlled stretching, off line solutionizing and aging, reeling machines, deburring and surface finishing, and cold redrawing need to be in place.

Additionally, Lloyds and Type tests for Marine Application and AS 9100 international standards for qualifying for Aerospace products.
