Future of Hybrid Renewables

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

I am a seasoned Power sector professional with over 12 years of diverse work, including 11+ Years dedicated to the Renewable Industry sector. Have started my career in Design Engineering and expanded to Techno commercial, Project Development, Business Solutioning, and cost estimation set of roles.

Have successfully contributed in planning, design and execution of 6-7.5 GW of Renewable Projects in India.

Q2. How do you foresee advances in battery technology (e.g., solid-state batteries, flow batteries) impacting the economics and scalability of hybrid renewable projects in the next 5 years?

Personally, I think Energy storage solution is a game-changer in the RE Sector, and it will open various new Business opportunities. The same is anticipated to fold massively in this decade.

  • I have worked mostly in Lithium Ion Technology in last 2-3 years and see a market dominance for at least 3-4 years to come.
  • NaS is the next game changer in this segment
  • Flow Batteries haven`t been adopted in the Indian Market on a large scale; however, they have their own presence globally and can be considered for long-term Projects and where a round-the-clock Project is being planned.

Q3. What trends are driving the adoption of battery energy storage systems in hybrid projects, and how is this influencing project sizing and contract terms?

Round the clock, Peak Power & Firm Despatchable RE Power are the new set of projects that are emerging, and a need for balancing Power. For Grid Stability and power quality control, storage systems play a big role.

Q4. How might emerging trends in corporate renewable procurement, such as energy-as-a-service or virtual PPAs, influence hybrid project structuring and commercialization strategies?

Big Players like Amazon and Microsoft have already shifted to this business model. The Policy & Regulation has to be aligned and more favourable for this set of transactions.

Q5. What innovations in technical solutioning and asset management are proving most effective in optimizing hybrid project performance and cost control?

Wind + Solar are still the best choice for a Hybrid Set of solutions. However, it is customized as per the Tender / Customer requirement.

Q6. How are digital tools and data analytics transforming performance monitoring, predictive maintenance, and cost optimization in hybrid renewable assets?

It is great to see the Digitization coming in RE Performance monitoring. However, there is a lot to work on. Integration of DSM into Digitalization and block-wise Energy shifting by using "AI / Machine learning" is anticipated in the coming years.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

  • Long Term Vision
  • Policy and Risk analysis
  • Tools used for Automation of Design / Asset Monitoring
  • Technology Adoption
