Automation in Components: Promise vs Payoff

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

Helping businesses deliver Strategy / Change / Execution / Results / CEO / Business Leader / Automotive Expertise / Driving Growth / Leadership / EBITDA Margins.
Expertise in Strategy formulation & execution, Transformation, Business Development, Projects, Strategic sourcing, multi-geography plants management, and turnaround specialist.

Q2. What structural changes are you observing in the automotive components ecosystem as OEMs accelerate their shift toward electrification and connected vehicles?

Commonization of platforms, i.e., using common Body structures and Chassis to reduce the development costs as well as timelines to go to market- For Example: TATA Motors - ALL ICE PV is also available in EV version.
For connected vehicles, similar components are being used.

Q3. Where are automation, smart manufacturing, or digital tools genuinely improving productivity for component manufacturers, and where have they struggled to deliver meaningful ROI?

Digital automation; Due to high initial costs and low labor costs, the ROI is delayed: also, the market volatility is a cause of concern: New Age vehicles OEM production volumes Plan Vs Actuals are very different: Digitalization is improving quality -Less Human errors: Productivity may be slightly different: But total quality product is also on the higher side.

Q4. Where do emission norms, sustainability targets, or localisation requirements most pressure margins for auto component suppliers, and how are leading players managing this trade-off?

Cafe-III norms may be implemented as the MoRTH guidelines. The cost pressures due to Vehicle price sustainability are becoming tough, with Technology upgradation & safety features causing cost increases. Still, volume growth is helping to sustain the cost pressures to some extent. Alternate materials are being explored to ensure better cost management.

Q5. Which vehicle segment or export market looks attractive in growth data but is operationally hardest for component suppliers to scale profitably?

Exports to EU & USA: Tariff & quality norms: Volume/Product mix variation: is getting tougher: USD vs INR is a big pressure.
Electronics-based products are a bigger challenge in India than in China /Taiwan.

Q6. Which stage of the automotive components value chain remains most vulnerable to disruption today, and what signals typically indicate stress emerging in that part of the supply chain?

Electronic Chip components / Ferrite magnets / Electrical grade steels, etc., as well as the specialty plastics raw materials: Disruptors: India is working to build strength in these weak areas.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

•    Next five years- Business Plan: Assured & Committed business
•  Supply chain Sustainability - Domestic & Imports - Contracts (Last three years of extra /premium freight paid for arranging the raw materials/components)
•    Cost of manufacturing: Improvements plans: Last three years: Plan Vs Actuals
•    Manpower -sustainability - Cost
•    ESOPS -Plan vs actuals.
