Defense AI: The Trends Shaping Tomorrow
Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?
I have spent my entire career in the defense tech industry. I have worked with primes, neo-primes, and modern defense tech companies. I have focused on engineering, requirements, procurement, competitive landscape, market trends, key players, and how systems get funded and fielded.
Q2. What are the key trends currently reshaping the defense AI and autonomy market, and which do you expect to have the greatest impact over the next 3–5 years?
Attritable and autonomous systems are the gateway into the new age of warfare. Large, expensive systems are too vulnerable and expensive, while inexpensive mass has become far more effective. Coupled with autonomy, mass augments and perhaps one day replaces many roles currently used by soldiers. Autonomous systems against other autonomous systems create a new rung on the escalation ladder before targeting troops. This may increase the number of countries that participate in skirmish activities. The defense industrial base and a country's ability to operate in an autarky environment are key components of a nation's success in a war with disrupted supply chains.
Q3. What characteristics distinguish defense-tech startups that successfully transition their products into DoD programs from those that struggle to gain adoption?
A lot of money is being poured into the domestic defense market, and many companies are trying to take some of it. Competition is significant, and there isn't room for many winners in each sector. Defense tech operating in the US has only the US as a customer because of ITAR, so creating a product that fits real warfighter requirements is the differentiating factor. Often, building a product to contractual requirements will not ensure the warfighter actually uses it, so companies need extensive system engineering and requirements refinement.
Q4. What role will open architectures, interoperable systems, and software-defined capabilities play in the next generation of defense technology?
The US has faced vendor lock-in, much to the detriment of product capability and the taxpayer's wallet. Modern contracts explicitly demand interoperability, open architectures, and the ability to use other software vendors. This removes a massive moat that players with fielded equipment historically have had. It also lowers the margin of software products as a whole, which should reduce the multiples of modern defense tech companies.
Q5. Based on your experience across AI and autonomy programs, what is the one technology trend or market opportunity in defense that you believe investors are underestimating today?
Today, most eyes are on autonomy for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) due to their unparalleled success in the Russo-Ukrainian war. Still, unmanned ground systems are increasingly going to be developed. The technology is still nascent but developing rapidly and will eventually support mission sets that would be too taxing for modern infantry.
