Top Automotive Trends in India

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

I have come across 33 plus years of work experience in the automobile industry: 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, cars, and heavy commercial mining equipment.

Q2. What are the key leading indicators signaling that rural demand is shifting from steady growth to an accelerated, scalable phase?

Automobile industry volumes are increasing because of rural market numbers. Rural consumers now have the buying capacity. Land values are rising, and more family members are earning income.

Q3. What is the primary 'moat'—beyond mere sales volume—that separates a future-proof dealership group from traditional, transactional operators?

The dealership group has expanded with outlets in every 50 to 100 km radius to reach potential areas. Also, the online and digital sales volume is increasing day by day.

Q4. With high volumes of 3–5-year-old SUVs entering the pre-owned market, how are dealers specifically hedging against potential residual value volatility?

The sub-4-meter SUV category is playing a vital role in the Indian market, accounting for over 60%. There, the pre-owned market is increasing. So the value fixing needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Q5. How does the rise of HEVs fundamentally alter the long-term after-sales revenue profile compared to traditional ICE models?

Government pollution norms and eco-friendly considerations are important factors influencing the adoption of HEVs. Lithium battery costs are high and directly affect vehicle pricing. Road tax regulations can also affect the overall cost of ownership. Long-term mileage is a key consideration for buyers, since it determines the total value proposition of HEVs. Additionally, HEVs typically require less maintenance, which further improves their advantage over standard models.

Q6. Which segments of the component supply chain are most vulnerable to margin compression under current OEM cost-management pressures?

Lithium batteries, chips and semiconductors, and software components are particularly susceptible to margin compression because of high demand and rapid technological change. Additionally, government pollution norms impose stringent requirements on engine design and emissions, affecting cost structures and supply chain dynamics in the automotive sector.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

Inventory management, effective marketing strategies, skilled staff, and comprehensive area coverage are all vital components for sustainable business growth. Additionally, a thorough study of the competition, robust customer support systems, and ongoing review processes are essential to ensure continuous improvement and long-term success.
