What Will Drive Critical Minerals Value in 2026?
Akshay Rana, CEO of Astra Minerals SARL, a leading bauxite company based in Guinea, and Director – Commercial at Eastern Trade Network FZCO, brings deep expertise in mining, supply chains, and commercial strategy across West Africa, the Middle East, and India. With years of hands-on leadership, Rana has developed a unique perspective on where investment opportunities truly lie in the rapidly evolving critical minerals sector. In this article, Mr. Rana challenges conventional wisdom, emphasizing that the most compelling opportunities aren’t always in headline-grabbing commodities like lithium and rare earths. Instead, he highlights the immense value in processing capacity—especially in regions seeking alternatives to traditional refining hubs—and in bulk minerals such as bauxite, which underpin key industries but often fly under the radar. Mr. Rana also discusses the make-or-break impact of logistics, freight contracts, and infrastructure, noting that these factors can outweigh even geological advantages. He shares hard-won lessons from large-scale commercial and procurement management, including the importance of risk allocation in contracts, the pitfalls of fixed pricing, and the benefits of investing in local suppliers and spend visibility tools. Rana further details how diversification, strong offtake agreements, and close attention to policy and documentation are critical for building resilient supply chains and securing long-term market access. Experts reading this article will gain a fresh, practical framework for evaluating mining projects—one that goes beyond geology to prioritize logistics, relationships, and adaptability. Rana’s insights are particularly valuable for leaders seeking sustainable margins, robust supply chains, and a strategic edge in an increasingly complex global minerals landscape.
Q1. From your experience across mining and minerals, where do you see the most compelling investment opportunities as demand for critical minerals and secure supply chains grows?
Honestly, not where most people are looking. Lithium and rare earths get the headlines, and they get the speculative money too. That's part of why prices in those markets swing so hard.
Processing Opportunities
I find the better value in two less glamorous places. The first is processing. Mining is spread across dozens of countries, but refining is concentrated in very few. Buyers in India, Europe, and the Gulf now actively want another option, and they'll pay for it. Anyone building processing capacity close to the resource, or in a friendly jurisdiction, is solving a problem the whole market has.
Bulk Minerals Potential
The second is bulk minerals, the ones nobody finds exciting. I work in bauxite, so I'm biased, but look at the logic. Aluminium goes into grids, solar frames, vehicles and packaging. Bauxite sits on the EU's critical raw materials list. Guinea has the largest reserves in the world. Yet the roads, ports and mid-sized producers here are nowhere near the scale of the resource underneath them.
