I firmly believe that generative AI will be the biggest disruptor since IBM introduced the first smartphone in 1992 to our daily lives and how we work.  OpenAI’s Chat GPT has led to an explosion in generative AI solutions that can do everything from building a website to answering customer queries, generating the minutes of your meetings, to writing a marketing plan for you. Both Adobe and Google recently unveiled their generative AI creative production solutions, and it is already hard to recognize what was created by a human and what was generated by AI. Goldman Sachs has predicted that AI could replace 300 million full-time jobs. The report notes that 46% of tasks in administrative and 44% in legal professions could be automated.  So should we be scared or embrace it?  <h2 style="text-align: justify;">AI as an Enabler of Innovation </h2>While there are many valid concerns about the impact generative AI will have on jobs, it is important to recognize that it also presents a fantastic opportunity for innovation. AI possesses the potential to augment our capabilities by liberating us from repetitive and mundane tasks, thereby enabling us to dedicate our efforts towards higher-value work. Throughout history, we have witnessed how technological advancements have consistently given rise to new opportunities. The Industrial Revolution and the advent of the internet serve as prime examples, demonstrating how innovation can reshape employment landscapes. The Goldman Sachs report also noted that occupations that exist today did not even exist back in 1940, highlighting the transformative power of technological progress. While it may take time for some individuals to adapt to these changes, those who embrace the potential of generative AI and automation will benefit greatly. I predict an explosion of startups across many existing industries because it is easy to analyze competitors, build a business plan and launch your business online.  Similarly, the growth of generative AI is likely to generate new roles and industries, creating a demand for skills that complement AI technology. Remember waiting over a day for meeting notes? Having to spend hours writing a blog and taking weeks to do market research? Those days are over, and that can only be a good thing. The people who will succeed will ask themselves two questions: What can I automate through generative AI to free up my time to drive maximum impact? Which AI tools can I use to accelerate the growth of my business/career?  <h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Power of AI in Everyday Life </h2>It is worth noting that AI has already been deeply embedded in our lives for years, often without our conscious recognition. Major technology platforms like Google and Meta have been utilizing AI algorithms to enhance their services, providing personalized recommendations, improving search results, and enhancing user experiences. The adoption of AI by Microsoft has forced Google to make the biggest changes in their search results for decades.  Disruption leads to innovation!  From voice assistants to smart homes, AI has become an integral part of our daily routines, proving that its adoption can lead to significant advancements and convenience. Chat GPT does what you hoped Siri would do!  <h2 style="text-align: justify;">Investing in Education and Governance </h2>As AI continues to evolve, investing in education becomes paramount. Governments, organizations, and individuals should foster a learning culture that encourages continuous reskilling and upskilling. AI will turn the current education system on its head as the current projects teachers give students will be done in seconds by AI. The world’s most advanced cities aren’t ready for artificial intelligence disruptions, claims Oliver Wyman, a management consulting firm. Forbes reported that over 50 million Chinese workers may require retraining due to AI-related deployment.  The U.S. will be required to retool 11.5 million people in America with the skills needed to survive in the workforce. They also reported that millions of workers in Brazil, Japan, and Germany would need assistance with the changes brought by AI, robotics, and related technology. If governments and employers do not invest in education, then there is the potential for many people to have irrelevant skills and for unemployment to skyrocket. This is a stark reality that applies to the vast majority of countries across the world. There is also the issue of fake news. Companies like Meta and Twitter bore the brunt of the past problems on this topic. We have seen election results impacted by fake news, and if you watched Senator Richard Blumenthal’s opening of the senate hearing with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, it was both impressive and frightening to hear the opening speech in his voice, which was 100% AI-generated.  Mark Zuckerburg has many times highlighted the desire for regulations to be introduced for the internet. Governments are playing catch up, and some of the questions asked in the hearings with Mark Zuckerburg and Shou Chew showed worrying gaps in understanding the business models for digital platforms. Governments and regulatory bodies need to be more proactive in understanding AI. Embracing the growth of AI requires us to remain adaptable and open to change, allowing us to stay ahead of the curve. The flip side of the lack of skills is that this can represent an opportunity for people to learn early, understand AI, and teach others.
