India’s Push Toward MedTech Self-Reliance

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

With more than 25 years of experience, I have built my career in healthcare procurement, supply chain management, biomedical engineering, and hospital infrastructure development. In recent years, I have served as General Manager – Supply Chain at the Medanta group of hospitals, one of India's leading healthcare institutions. In this role, I have overseen strategic sourcing, capital equipment procurement, vendor relationships, contract negotiations, and the full execution of major hospital projects.

Over the years, I've specialized in sourcing high-value medical technologies, from imaging systems and robotic surgery platforms to critical care equipment, laboratory diagnostics, and infrastructure solutions. I've led procurement for both new and expanding hospitals, always focused on optimizing costs without compromising quality, compliance, or clinical standards. For me, effective procurement is about supporting organizational growth, improving patient outcomes, and creating lasting value.

Q2. What structural trends are driving demand for new medical equipment and hospital infrastructure investments across India?

India's healthcare sector is in the midst of a major transformation, shaped by shifts in demographics, rising economic prosperity, and advances in technology. Over the past several decades, longer life expectancy, a rise in chronic diseases, greater health awareness, and broader insurance coverage have all contributed to a surge in demand for quality healthcare services.

At the same time, healthcare providers are extending their reach beyond major metro areas into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where the need for advanced diagnostics and specialized care is rising quickly. Government programs like Ayushman Bharat, new Public Private Partnership (PPP) models, increased foreign investment, and the growth of medical tourism are all fueling even faster development of healthcare infrastructure.

As a result, hospitals are being driven to invest in modern equipment, digital solutions, and scalable infrastructure that can deliver high-quality care while keeping operations efficient.

Q3. How are advancements in AI, robotics, imaging, and diagnostics changing the way hospitals evaluate technology investments?

Hospitals are shifting their focus from simply buying equipment to making investment decisions based on real-world outcomes. These days, they look beyond just the price tag, weighing how each technology can improve clinical results, boost productivity, streamline workflows, and enhance the overall patient experience.

Artificial intelligence is helping doctors diagnose more accurately and even predict health issues before they arise. Robotic-assisted surgery allows for greater precision, leading to quicker recoveries and shorter hospital stays. New imaging technologies provide faster, more reliable results, and the latest diagnostic platforms make it easier to tailor treatments to each individual patient.

Because of these advances, healthcare organizations are now judging technologies by the total value they bring—factoring in things like long-term costs, how well systems work together, how often they're used, their impact on patient care, and the return on investment over time.

Q4. How is the competitive landscape evolving among global OEMs, domestic manufacturers, and emerging medical technology providers?

Competition in the healthcare technology space is more varied and innovation-focused than ever before. While global OEMs still lead in specialized areas like advanced imaging, robotic surgery, and complex diagnostics, domestic manufacturers are making real strides by investing in research, improving manufacturing, and bringing new products to market.

At the same time, new med-tech startups are shaking up the industry with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, digital health, remote monitoring, and cloud-based healthcare systems.

All these changes mean healthcare providers now have more options and flexibility than ever before. Instead of relying on brand reputation alone, they’re choosing technologies based on value, performance, service, and the results they deliver for patients.

Q5. What opportunities and challenges do you see emerging from India's push toward greater self-reliance in medical technology and healthcare infrastructure?

India’s push for self-reliance in healthcare technology is opening up some of the biggest opportunities the sector has seen in years. Programs like Make in India and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes are sparking homegrown innovation, cutting down on imports, and making the supply chain more resilient.

But the benefits go far beyond just saving money. Manufacturing locally can help providers respond faster, reduce wait times, encourage the development of technologies tailored to India’s unique healthcare needs, and put India on the map as a global hub for med-tech manufacturing.

Of course, long-term success will mean continuing to invest in research, quality, regulatory standards, and keeping up with international benchmarks. It will also be essential to build trust in Indian-made technologies among clinicians and to create strong local networks for manufacturing key components.

Q6. How are evolving regulatory standards and accreditation requirements influencing procurement and technology adoption decisions?

Regulatory compliance and accreditation standards now play a central role in how hospitals make purchasing decisions. Today’s hospitals work in an environment where there’s growing focus on patient safety, quality, cybersecurity, data protection, and transparency in operations.

Frameworks like NABH and NABL accreditation, along with changing regulations from CDSCO and international agencies, are pushing hospitals to choose technologies that help them stay compliant and raise the bar for clinical quality.

As a result, procurement teams are looking more closely at things like regulatory certifications, equipment reliability, ongoing support, cybersecurity measures, and the quality systems of their vendors. It’s not just about adopting the latest technology anymore—meeting tough governance and quality standards matters just as much.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

One question matters most:
I’d want management to clearly explain what truly sets the company apart from its competitors. Is it their technology, intellectual property, cost leadership, customer relationships, brand reputation, or distribution network? Just as important, I’d ask how hard it would be for competitors to copy that edge—and what steps the company is taking to keep building on it.

In the end, their answer would reveal whether the company can create lasting growth and strong returns in the long run, or if it’s just riding a temporary wave of good market conditions.
