Solar PV Moves Toward Performance Focus

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

I come from a technical background in solar PV, with experience across the entire value chain—from materials and cell technology to module manufacturing. Over the years, I’ve worked closely on technology, manufacturing scale-up, and industry strategy, particularly in the Indian solar ecosystem. My focus has been on bridging technical innovation with practical industry needs.

Q2. What major shifts are currently reshaping the global solar PV manufacturing landscape, particularly across the ingot, wafer, cell, and module segments?

We are seeing a few major shifts. First, while China still dominates, countries like India, the U.S., and Europe are pushing for domestic manufacturing. Second, companies are becoming more vertically integrated to control costs and supply chains. Third, there is a clear technology shift from PERC to TOPCon and HJT. Lastly, scale is increasing rapidly, and margins are under pressure due to intense competition.

Q3. How are emerging cell technologies influencing the future efficiency and performance benchmarks of solar modules?

Emerging technologies are significantly improving efficiency and overall energy output. TOPCon is currently becoming mainstream due to its better performance and reliability. HJT offers even higher efficiency and better performance in hot climates, which is important for countries like India. In the future, tandem technologies could push efficiencies beyond 30%. Overall, the focus is now on lifetime energy generation rather than peak efficiency alone.

Q4. What sustainability challenges arise across the PV value chain—from ingot and wafer production to module manufacturing—and how are companies addressing them?

There are several challenges. Polysilicon and ingot production are highly energy-intensive. Wafer manufacturing results in material losses, and cell production involves chemical use. Additionally, end-of-life recycling is still a developing area. To address this, companies are moving toward renewable-powered manufacturing, improving process efficiency, and investing in recycling and circular economy solutions.

Q5. As global demand for solar energy accelerates, where do you see the most promising opportunities emerging across the PV value chain?

There are significant opportunities in upstream manufacturing, especially in India, where polysilicon and wafer production remain limited. Advanced cell technologies like TOPCon and HJT are also key areas. Beyond that, the supporting ecosystem—such as glass and materials—offers growth potential. Finally, integrating solar with storage and green hydrogen is an exciting long-term opportunity.

Q6. What performance parameters are becoming most critical for buyers when selecting PV modules in today’s solar market?

Buyers are now more focused on overall value than on price alone. Key parameters include LCOE, module efficiency, degradation rates, and performance in high temperatures. Bifacial capability is also important for utility-scale projects. In addition, reliability, bankability, and manufacturer warranty play a critical role in decision-making.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

I would ask: How do you plan to maintain a competitive advantage in a highly commoditized and fast-evolving market?
