Healthcare Procurement Shifts

Q1. Could you start by giving us a brief overview of your professional background, particularly focusing on your expertise in the industry?

With over 15 years in supply chain management, I’ve built my career across procurement, sourcing, vendor management, inventory control, logistics, and contract administration in diverse industries—from healthcare and financial services to hospitality, IT, and construction.

Right now, I lead the Purchase & Stores function as Manager – Purchase at Welcare Hospital. My role covers everything from procurement operations and budgeting to vendor development, contract negotiations, and supply chain process improvements. Before this, I took on key procurement leadership positions at Rajagiri Hospital, Muthoot Microfin Ltd., Sarovar Hotels, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, and Eco Tech Builders.

My core strengths include strategic sourcing, both CAPEX and OPEX procurement, vendor negotiations, cost optimization, bidding and tender management, supplier relationship management, inventory control, logistics coordination, and developing procurement policies. I’m experienced in setting up centralized purchasing systems, overseeing large procurement budgets, and driving cost-saving initiatives—all while keeping quality and compliance front and center.

On the academic front, I hold an MBA in Finance & Marketing and completed a Management Development Program in Supply Chain Management at IIM Tiruchirappalli, which sharpened my strategic and operational approach.
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve focused on building efficient supply chains, strengthening supplier relationships, and helping organizations grow through effective procurement and commercial management.

Q2. What structural shifts are redefining healthcare procurement, and how should hospitals adapt their sourcing strategies to remain resilient and cost-effective?

Drawing on my experience managing procurement in healthcare, hospitality, financial services, and construction, I’ve seen that the future of healthcare procurement is all about striking the right balance between cost efficiency, supply security, and clinical value. Procurement shouldn’t just be seen as a support role—it’s becoming a key driver of both patient care and organizational success.

Hospitals that embrace digital procurement tools, build strong supplier partnerships, expand their sourcing options, and use data to guide decisions will be much better equipped to handle market ups and downs, all while maintaining resilience and staying financially sustainable.

The healthcare procurement teams that really stand out are those who move beyond simply reacting to needs. By focusing on strategic supply chain management, they create long-term value and strong partnerships, putting resilience and collaboration ahead of just chasing the lowest price.

Q3. How do you see digital procurement, AI, and predictive analytics transforming purchasing decisions and inventory management in healthcare?

In my experience with healthcare procurement and supply chain management, I’ve seen that the future is moving toward smart, connected procurement ecosystems—where digital platforms, AI, and analytics all work together to support better decision-making.

The role of procurement professionals is already changing. Instead of just processing orders, we’re now managing supplier relationships, analyzing risks, finding ways to cut costs, and helping shape our organizations’ strategies. Hospitals that embrace these technologies today will set themselves up for success by achieving three important goals:
1. Cost Efficiency – Reducing procurement and inventory expenses.
2. Supply Chain Resilience – Lowering the risk of disruptions and shortages.
3. Better Patient Care –Making sure critical medical supplies and equipment are always available.
With AI and predictive analytics, hospitals can move away from simply reacting to inventory needs. Instead, they can take a more proactive and preventive approach to supply chain management—creating an environment that’s efficient, resilient, and truly focused on patient care.

Q4. How are suppliers adapting their business models to remain competitive amid increasing cost pressures and regulatory expectations in healthcare?

In my experience with healthcare procurement and supply chain management, I’ve noticed that the suppliers who will truly succeed are the ones who focus on partnership, innovation, compliance, and resilience—not just on price.
Today’s healthcare providers expect more from their suppliers, looking for:

•    Reliable supply continuity
•    Strong regulatory compliance
•    Opportunities to optimize costs
•    The ability to integrate digitally
•    Sustainable business practices

To meet these expectations, suppliers need to move beyond being just vendors and become true strategic partners in the supply chain. Those who invest in technology, reinforce compliance, build resilient supply chains, and show clear value to healthcare organizations will be best equipped to thrive as the industry evolves.

Q5. As hospitals digitize procurement processes, how are buyer expectations changing for medical equipment and healthcare suppliers?

From what I’ve seen managing procurement in healthcare and other sectors, hospital buyers are shifting from simply making purchases to taking on a more strategic role as supply chain managers. Today, they look for suppliers who can deliver on four main fronts:
1. Digital Connectivity – seamless integration with hospital procurement systems
2. Operational Reliability – consistent supply and dependable service
3. Business Intelligence – useful data, analytics, and insights that help drive better decisions
4. Value Creation – real, measurable improvements in cost, efficiency, and patient outcomes

Looking ahead, the medical equipment and healthcare suppliers who stand out will be those who offer more than just great products. They’ll pair quality with digital know-how, strong compliance, resilient supply chains, and a genuine spirit of partnership. Hospitals will increasingly choose suppliers who help them boost efficiency and achieve better clinical results—not just those offering the lowest price.

Q6. How can hospitals capitalize on increasing localization of medical manufacturing to improve supply security and procurement efficiency?

From what I’ve seen in healthcare procurement and supply chain management, hospitals should see localization as a smart strategy—not just another way to source products. The best results come from a hybrid procurement model that blends the cost savings of global sourcing with the reliability and flexibility that local manufacturing provides.
Hospitals can make the most of localization by:
•    Pinpointing high-risk and critical categories that are well-suited for local sourcing
•    Building long-term partnerships with qualified local manufacturers
•    Bringing local suppliers into their digital procurement platforms
•    Regularly reviewing supplier performance and assessing risks
•    Working closely with manufacturers to improve demand planning and manage inventory

As more medical manufacturing shifts locally, hospitals gain a valuable opportunity to boost supply security, agility, cost control, and resilience. Healthcare organizations that build strong local supplier networks while keeping their sourcing strategies diverse will be better prepared for future disruptions and able to deliver uninterrupted patient care.

Q7. If you were an investor looking at companies within the space, what critical question would you pose to their senior management?

When it comes to supply chain and procurement, I believe investors should look past just current revenues and consider whether the company’s leadership has a solid plan for:
•    Building resilient supply chains
•    Embracing digital technologies
•    Strengthening relationships with customers
•    Navigating regulatory requirements
•    Consistently delivering profits
If I were in their shoes, I’d want to ask:
What concrete steps are you taking right now to make sure your company stays the go-to partner for healthcare providers, while also achieving sustainable growth and long-term value for shareholders?
How management answers this question reveals a lot about their vision, ability to execute, and readiness to face future industry challenges.
